Notes for JANE COWARD:
Obituary Clipping from family bible:
At the residence of her son, Wm. E. Gill, of this parish, on May 12th, Mrs. Jane Gill, aged 80 years, 10 months and 10 days. The subject of this sketch, Mrs. Jane Gill, wife of Dr. John Gill of Rapides Parish, was born in South Carolina, July 2, 1804, and moved with her parents to Amite Co., Miss., where she met and married Dr. John Gill. She and her husband moved in 1844 to Rapides Parish, where they resided until his death in 1864. Mrs. Gill soon after gave up housekeeping and spent the remainder of her long and useful life with her children in this parish. She spent most of her time at the home of her son, Hon. W. E. Gill, of Big Woods, where she died. She united with Ramah Baptist Church in Lawrence Co., Miss., about the year 1830, and afterwards moved her membership to Mount Pleasant Church in Rapides Parish, of which she remained a member until her death. In the death of Mrs. Gill, the church has lost one of its brightest lights, the community a member loved and revered by all for true nobility and generosity, the family a mother in every sense of the word; and we offer to the bereaved our sincere condolence, and we who are left, imitate her virtues that we may receive a like reward. She was also directly connected with some of the best families in Amite Co., Miss., among others, the Bates' family, she being a sister to the mother of Richard P. Bates, Sr., a near relative of W.A. Gill and brothers.
NOTE: She wasn't a sister to the mother of Richard P. Bates, Sr. Her mother was Elizabeth Bates, so Richard was either her uncle or cousin.

Notes for HOWELL W. ILES:
Obituary clipping from family bible:
Sugartown, LA, Oct. 2 -- One of the largest and most impressive funerals that has ever been held in Sugartown was conducted by the Masonic Fraternity at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon over the body of Howell W. Iles, aged 70 years, 3 months, 13 days. Mr. Iles had been in poor health for the last year or more; then several months ago he had a stroke of apoplexy, and from that time he has been gradually growing worse, and the end was not unexpected. Mrs. Iles and their children -- Henry, John, Murphy and Clara -- were at his bedside for the past several days, doing all they could to comfort him in his last hours. Mr. Iles was born and raised near the place of his death, and he has been a constant resident of Calcasieu from infancy. He was the son of Dempsey and Clara Cherry Iles, who moved from Texas to Louisiana in the early part of the century and settled near Sugartown, where they reared a family of twelve children. Several of the sons of this family were in the Confederate Army, some of whom never returned, but four of the brothers -- John, Jeff, Dempsey and Howell -- entered the stock business at the close of the Civil War and became prominent in the part of the state as stockmen and farmers. The three sons just named have died within the last few years. Three of the daughters married and moved to Texas. One being Mrs. Singleton of Sugartown, another Mrs. Simmons of DeRidder, and the last being Mrs. Perkins of DeQuincey and the only living child of this old pioneer family. Mr. Iles and Miss Julia Gill, sister of H.C. Gill of Lake Charles, were quietly married shortly after the Civil War, and to this union were born three sons and one daughter, all of whom survive him.
NOTE: A footnote to mistakes in the above obit: Howell's parents listed as Dempsey and Clara Cherry. Should be Sarah Cherry. Also said in last paragraph they were quietly married after the Civil War, they were married on December 10, 1857.
