Hampton County, South Carolina, Welcome!

Hampton County Churches

Mt. Carmel Methodist Church

Mt. Carmel is located on Hwy. 3 east going out of Estill and Nixville. It is located on Browning Gate Road and Mt. Carmel Rd.  Mt. Carmel was established in 1844. It is located several miles east of Lebanon.  After 1835 when Sifleys Chapel was established near Solomons Crossroads in Seminole Community, other churches sprang up. Some of them were Estill, Furman, and Mt. Carmel.  Methodism's history in Hampton County, SC began in 1739 when eight or ten persons came to John Wesley in London who appeared to be deeply convinced of sin, and earnestly praying for redemption. They desired that he spend time with them in prayer and advise them to flee from the wrath to come which they saw continually hanging over their heads. This was the beginning of Methodism. From this group, missionaries were sent to America, John Wesley himself being one who came.  Some who came to this country preached in what is now Hampton County along locations on or near Savannah River. This was as early as 1790, then as one church was built along came another and spread throughout the areas along the Savannah River and communities that were located some distance but close to the River. Hence Methodism was adopted into the county and surrounding communities in the county.  Along with the white community, the black community were enlisted into Methodism and organized churches of their own in the County.

The cemetery is located to the left of the church. Some of the names in cemetery are Peeples, Deloach, Griner, Smith, and Westbury.  There are several graves with pvc pipes formed to make an X into the ground at the end. These were  placed there to mark soilders who had served in the Civil War.
