| PAYTON / PEYTON |
I am looking for information on Leroy R. Payton or his
father Isaac Payton (may have gone by Peyton) circa 1880 in Hampton County.
As they were African-American, they may show up in slave records of prior
periods. The 1880 census shows an Isaac Peyton age 44 with spouse Dinah White
and 6 children at the time. Leroy was born later, in 1892, possibly in Barnwell
or Orangeburg County. 2 Aug. 2002 |

| PEEPLES |
I am trying to ascertain the particulars of an incident in Hampton County
on July 2, 1856, involving the husband of my great(x4)-aunt. His name was
Jesse Williamson Peeples, and hers Catherine Rebecca Harrison Peeples. On
Jesse Williamson Peeples' tombstone, located in the Lawtonville Cemetery
in Estill, is an epitaph that reads, in part: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE
LAMENTED JESSE WILLIAMSON PEEPLES; REPRESENTATIVE OF ST. PETERS PARISH WHO
WAS MURDERED ON THE 2ND DAY OF JULY A. D. 1856, IN THE 43nd YEAR OF HIS AGE.
HIS LAST AND ONLY DYING WORDS WERE "LAY ME DOWN, ALFRED MARTIN HAS
CUT ME AND STABBED ME TO PIECES." I have tracked down the name Alfred
Martin to a person whom I believe to be the correct person referenced in
the epitaph, namely Alfred Maner Martin, who is buried in the Bostwick Cemetery
in Hampton County. Would you know of any local history sources that
could possibly shed some light on what happened that led to the events on
July 2, 1856? I believe that there was a duel between the two men, but I
base this belief only on what seems to be implied by the epitaph and my knowledge
of the station of the two men. 28 June 2004 |

| PHILLIPS |
I am interested in Phillips in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper,
and Old 96. I can connect a Dempsey Phillips with the Jacob Phillips and
others in these areas. I was trying to locate Civil War records for John,
Preston and Jacob Phillips They were brothers of my husband's grandfather,
Bartley Phillips out of Hampton County. We traced the original land grant
to 1000 acres outside Grays, SC. But the Phillips had come to the area from
further up, I believe. From Barnwell, Bamberg, Old 96 and Anderson areas....Maybe
NC before that. I have much info and pictures to share and 10,000 names dates
etc. 7 Jan. 2001 |

| PORCHER |
Dear Historian, I am trying to find information on my Grandfather, James
William Porcher, He was from Hampton and married my Grandmother, Irene Olive
Tiller; Lexington Georgia, in Oglethorpe county around 1906-1909. His sister
married Governor Miles B. McSweeney. His tenure was 1899-1903. Her name was
Mattie Mae Porcher, or Martha, or the French way of Marthe.I have a beautiful
watch given by the governor to my Grandfather. My Grandfathers Mother
was Katharine Davant. I believe my Great Grandfathers name was Francis
Porcher. I do know we are from the original Huguenots who came in the
1600s. My early settlers were Issaac Porcher and Jean Davant around
1687. If there is a local historian who is a Porcher or Davant, I would like
to make contact with them and try to pull my heritage together. Please
forgive my lack of knowledge in approaching this plea for assistance. 28

| PRICHER |
Thomas Pricher/Pritcher married Susannah Murdaugh around 1825.
Most of the Murdaughs I have located have been from Islandton, which I know
is just inside Colleton County. Two of my ancestors are named Varn, which
I know to be a Hampton County surname. My searches in Colleton County for
information on the Pricher/Pritcher name have turned up little. I am supposing
that this may be because they were actually located in Hampton County, possibly
with another spelling of the name. Any information that any one could offer
would be appreciated.

| PRIMUS |
I am searching for information on my Great Grandparents Madison
PRIMUS and Alice PRIMUS. To the best of my knowledge, they were born in Yemassee
around the 1850's maybe. I have no idea what Alice's maiden name was. I know
of at least one child that they had (I'm sure there were others). She was
my Grandmother Clementine Primus Stevens. I believe Clementine had a half
brother named Daniel Priester who moved to Philadelphia. Clementine married
a man named Thomas Stevens (Stephens) and they had at least 8 children: James,
William Jessie, Zackie, Lillie Mae, Mary, Alice, Pauline and Barnettia.
Clementine and her son Zackie are buried next to each other at Zion AME Church
in Yemassee, where her name reads: Cleam Stevens. Any and all information
on Madison and Alice PRIMUS would be greatly appreciated.
