Marion Farmers Quarrel and One Killed The Other.
Joe Byrd was shot and killed by Kendall Huggins near Latta.
Special to the State.
Latta---Oct 22---This morning about seven miles west of this place Joe Byrd was
shot and instantly killed by Kendall Huggins, the 18 year old adopted son of Lewis Hayes.
Both parties are white farmers. Young Huggins, who made no effort to escape, was
promptly arrested and carried to Marion this afternoon where he was lodged in jail.
It seems that some trouble arose over a horse trade. Angry words were
passed when they met at Kirby's crossroads and it is reported that Byrd advanced on
him with his buggy whip, when young Huggins shot him near the heart with an old cap
and ball pistol loaded with shot.
