W E Bethea
W E Bethea died at his home in Latta on Christmas day, Sunday, December 25, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. While he had been ill for some time due to some heart afliction, he was thought to be improving, when suddenly the end came. He was devoted to his church and to all vital interests of the community. For thirty-five years he was the teacher of Bible classes first in our church at Zion and in which community he lived and worked until 1898, then in Latta where for thirty years he has been an active, consecrated leader in the church, serving for many years there on the Board of Stewards and holding other official relations.
Obituary transcribed from the Southern Christian Advocate January 26, 1928 Volume 92 #4 page 13 col 1 from the Sandor Teszler Library of Wofford College:
W Ellis Bethea
Whereas, by the will of God, Bro W Ellis Bethea has been removed from his work in our church and the community, in both of which he was active and loyal. He was an ardent supporter of the church, a member of the board of stewards for a great many years, our district steward for the past several years, and for thirty-five years a teacher in the Sunday school here and at Zion. Therefore be it resolved:
First, that we express our appreciation of his services in the cause of Christ as a Christian leader and active worker in the church and Sunday school. In his going the Sunday school has lost a faithful teacher and the church a wise counselor.
Second, that we express our sympathy to his family in their bereavement, and pray that God, whom he so faithfully served, will comfort them in their sorrow.
Third, that a copy of these resolutions be mailed to the family, a copy sent to his Sunday school class and a copy mailed to the Southern Christian Advocate for publication.
