S Legare Bethea
S Legare Bethea, a former paymaster in the navy, who died April 9, in San Antonio, Texas, after recuperating from a serious spell of pneumonia, was buried at Dothan Church cemetery in the community in which he was reared.
His body arrived in Dillon Friday morning, April 9, accompanied by his widow and son, S Legare Bethea, Jr., and was taken immediately to the home of Mrs Georgia Bethea, his sister-in-law, where at 3 o'clock the funeral was held. The simple service was conducted by the Rev J P Inabnit, pastor of the Dillon Methodist Church, and the Rev Emory Edwards, pastor of the Darlington Methodist Church.
"Lee" Bethea, as he was familiarly known, was widely and prominently connected and his friends were numerous. Besides his widow, who before marriage was Miss Leona Henke, of Norfolk, he leaves three children, Legare, Jr., and two daughters, Mrs J D Elliott and Miss Shirley, all of San Antonio; and one sister, Mrs Clarence Monroe of Marion; his step-mother, Mrs Kate Bethea of Nichols. Among other close relatives are his nephews, J Earle and Thad Bethea of Dillon; P Osborne Bethea of Philadelphia, Andrew David Bethea of Tulane University Medical College, and his niece, Mrs Vernon Coggeswell of Dillon. Andrew J Bethea of Columbia, H A Bethea of Latta, and Dr P A Bethea of Darlington are first cousins and devoted boyhood friends.
