Rufus Oates
Myrtle Beach--Rufus L Oates, 66, of 48th Ave North, will be held at 2 pm Wednesday
September 1, 1999 at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, with Dr Wayne Brown officiating.
Burial will follow in Southeastern Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends
6-8 tonight at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Camp Kemo,
PO Box 4230, North Myrtle Beach, 29597.
Mr Oates died Saturday, August 28, 1999 at
Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born April 6, 1933, in Dillon County, he was a son of
the late Robert and Eva Beaver Oates. He moved to Myrtle Beach in the early 1960's and
opened Beach Music Center. He later opened Judy's House of Oldies in North Myrtle Beach,
which is family operated. He was an Honorary Member of the DJ Hall of Fame and had been
1995,1996,1997, and 1998 recipient of the Cammy Award for the best retail outlet in the
Beach Music Industry. He was a former member of Pine Lakes International Golf Club,
Myrtlewood Golf Club, the Golfers, and was a Mason.
Surviving are his wife, Ester L Oates; daughters, Judy O Collins, Jeannie O Faulk, all of Myrtle Beach; son, Jerry Oates of Charleston; brother, George Oates of Myrtle Beach; sister, Betty Jackson of Dillon; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
