WILL OF JOSEPH GREGG
The State of South Carolina
In the name of God, Almighty, I, Joseph Gregg of Marion District and state
aforesaid, being frail in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory,
thanks to Almighty God for the same and know that it is appointed for all men
once to die do make constitute appoint this my last will and testament in
manner and favor following (after my decease.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Alexander Gregg nine negroes, viz. Caesar,
Nanny, Mindow Jeffrey, Little Satirah, Lydia Harriet, Phyllis, and an infant
child of Nanny's not yet named him and the issue of his body forever. Also I
bind mv son Alexander at my decease to pay the Sum of six hundred dollars unto
my six children viz. Jannet Bigham, Robert Gregg, Mary Gregg Margaret Hudson,
Sarah Gregg, and Joseph Gregg, each an equal share.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Margaret
Ann Gregg one negro girl Olvira (Moire in old will) to her and the issue of
her body forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jannet Bigham five negroes:
viz. Tony, Dinah, Zachariah, Mauorine and Washington to her and the issue of
her body forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Gregg one tract of land in said
district lying on the Middle Branch granted to me for one hundred acres to him
and his heirs and assigns forever. Also I give unto my said son Robert Gregg
two negroes viz. Scipio (Chippie in old will ) and Jack, to him and the issue
of his body forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Gregg two negroes
viz. big Satirah and Little Hagar, with their increase, to her and the
issue of her body forever
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Margaret Hudson four negroes
viz. Newton and Fatima with her children Gabriel and Hagar with
their increase, to her and the issue of her body forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Gregg five negroes
viz. Venus with her children George, Harvy (or Harry ) Primus and Maria with
their increase to her and the issue of her body forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Gregg the plantation on which I
now reside to him his heirs and assigns forever. Also I give unto my son
Joseph Gregg two negroes viz. Simon and Peg with their increase to him and the
issue of his body forever.
Item. I give unto my three aforesaid children named Mary, Sarah and Joseph Gregg
to each one bedstead and furniture of their own choice. Also the household and
kitchen furniture with the amount of the hire of negroes willed to them that
may be on hand at my decease an the crop of provisions on hand at my
decease to be equally divided among them their heirs and assigns forever.
It is further my wish and desire that the remainder of my estate which I may be
possessed of be sold at public auction by my executors on a credit of one year
and the monies arising from such sale to be equally divided among the whole of
my above named children to them their heirs and assigns forever.
It is my will and desire that the monies above willed to my daughter ]annet Bigham
be reserved in the hands of my Executors and by them to be put out at interest
and dealt out to my said daughter Jannet Bigham for the support of her and her
children as they mav deem proper and their necessity require also for the
schooling of their children.
Lastly I now constitute and appoint my two sons Alexander Gregg and Joseph Gregg
and my friend John Gregg executors of this my last will and testament, and I do
hereby disannul revoke and make void all other will or testament by me hereafter
made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In writing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-fifth day of
October in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty four and forty eighth
year of American Independence.
