WILL OF
STEPHEN SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen.
I, Stephen shackelford of the District of Marion, and State
of South Carolina, being weak in body, but of a sound disposing mind, mem-
ory and understanding, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament,
in manner and form following. Imprimis, I will and direct that my Execu-
tors hereinafter named do pay all my just debts, and discharge the Legacies
herein contained, as soon after my descease, as soon thy may be legally
and conveniently enabled to do so.
Item, I give an bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Susannah Shackelford,
for and during the term of her natural life, the following property, that
is to say, two plantations or tracts of Land purchased by me from John Do-
sier in his lifetime, each tract containing two hundred acres, and known by
the name of the Point field, and Bear Pond tracts; also all my household
and kitchen furniture, plantation tools, Carts, Wagon, and every other arti-
cle on my plantation necefsary for carrying on a farm; also two yoke of
Oxen, One horse and one brood mare, (such as she may select,) my Carriage,
One mule, twenty five head of Sheep, fifteen cows and calves, four head of
beef cattle, and thirty head of hogs; and also the following negro Slaves,
to wit, Rose and her four children John, Sampson, Moses and chloe, Joe,
Cain & Nanny: and from and after the descease of my said wife, I give and
bequeath all and singular the aforesaid property Real and Personal, (except
Moses, the Son of Rose) in manner and form following, that is to say, one
fourth part of the same to my Son John Shackelford, to him and his heirs
forever; One fourth part to my daughter Ann Rogers, to her and her heirs
forever; and the remaining two fourths of the same, I give and bequeath to
my executors hereinafter named, in Trust neverthelefs, and to and for the
equal use and behoof, of my daughters Elizabeth Paisley, and ///Mary//////Elisabeth
Moody, for an during the term of each of their natural lives; and from and after
the death of either of my last aforesaid daughter, I give the property held
in trust for said daughters, to her surviving ifsues forever.
Item, I give and bequeath to my Son John Shackelford one tract of Land in
Eagerton's point, adjoining the land above conveyed to my aforesaid wife

containing about eighty acres & surveyed for me by John Dozier in his life-
time; also the following negro Slaves, to wit, Peter, Nero, Bob, & Murreah,
to him and his heirs forever.
Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Rogers, one negro girl named
Nancy, together with her future increase, to her and her heirs forever.
Item, on the death of my aforesaid wife, I give and bequeath the negro boy
named Moses to Eli Jones, to him and his heirs forever. Item, Whereas I
own a moiety of a tract of Land of three hundred acres, more or lefs pur-
chased jointly by my Nephew James Shackelford and myself from Richard Smith,
I give and bequeath the Same to my Said Wife Susannah Shackelford for and du-
ring the term of her natural life, and from and after her death I give and
bequeath the same to my Grandson John Baker Shackelford to him and his heirs
forever, the other moiety of said land being conveyed by me by Deed, to his
father Stephen Shackelford in his lifetime. Item, In the bequest to my wife
Susannah Shackelford of all my household furniture, it. is my meaning and
intention to convey thereby to her two beds & furniture out of the beds & bed-
ding of which I may die seized and pofsefsed, and it is my will and desire
that the remainder of my beds and bedding together with such other articles
of furniture, plantation tools &so forth, as my said wife may not need or
have use for, shall pofs into the hands of my Executors subject to the dis-
position and distribution hereinafter provided in the residuary clause of
this my last will and testement. Item, Whereas I have already given to my
aforesaid children John Shackelford, Ann Rogers, Elizabeth Paisley, and Mary
Moody, Sundry negro Slaves, furniture, stock of cattle, horses and so forth,
which they have already, respectively had the pofsefsion of, I hereby ratify
and confirm the aforesaid gifts. Item, it is my will and desire that the
residue of my Estate be sold by my Executors and the money arising therefrom
be appplied to the payment of any debts which I may be owing; and Should
there be any money remaining after the payment of said debts, that the same
be equally divided among my Surviving Children, and that that part or portion
which may be allotted to my daughters Elizabeth Paisley and Mary Moody be
held subject to the same trusts as are hereinbefore created.
Lastly I nominate, constitute and appoint my son John Shackelford and my
friend Benjamin Holt, Executors to this my last Will and Testament, hereby

revoking all and every Will or Wills, by me at any time heretofore made,
and declaring and pronouncing this only to be and contain my last Will and
Testament.
In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal
this fifth day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand
Eight hundred and thirty four, and in the fifty ninth year
of the Sovreignty and Independence of the United States of
America.
