Walter Swett Killed By Duncan Grant’s Blow
A Fight in Marlboro County Results in Death of a Prominent Young Farmer
Special to the State—Bennettsville, Dec 4—Duncan Grant, charged with the
murder of Walter Swett, came to Bennettsville this morning and surrendered to Sheriff
Green.
It seems that Mr Swett, a prosperous and well-to-do farmer of the upper part of
this county, went to Cheraw last Friday. Returning he met Duncan Grant about three
miles out from Cheraw and they got into a dispute and had a fight, after which they shook
hands and parted, agreeing to go bird hunting that afternoon. Mr Swett went on towards
home and stopped at the home of Mr John Leviner. Soon Mr Grant came up and a fight
followed and Grant struck Swett with a gun, inflicting mortal wounds, from which Swett
died early Saturday morning.
Swett was a well known young farmer and leaves a wife and two children. Grant
was born in this county, but has been living in Florida for some time, being on a visit to
relatives at the time of the homicide.
