I at Pocotaligo, SC, 3 Feb 1863, while home on sick furlough. Arrested and sent to Camp of Instruction, [Columbia, SC], 1 Apr 1863, and subsequently returned to 17th SC Infantry. KIA at Petersburg, VA, 30 Sep 1864. Brother of Robert A. VARN.

(VARN, Robert A. (1840?1864?): 5/IPVT, Barnwell Dist. b. abt. 1840. Enlisted at Pocotaligo, SC, 6 Mar 1863, [age 23]. Last reported as granted a 60-day medical furlough at General Hospital, Kittrell Springs, NC, 31 Aug 1864. Probably died at home in 1864. Brother of Carson W. VARN.

Enlisted at Santee, SC, 30 Oct 1861, and appt. 1LT. Trans. to Co. L/O, 20th SC Infantry, 7 Oct 1863, and appt. CPT. After that unit was disbanded, served as PVT in Co. B, 2d SC Cavalry.
