Street, Newton

Sweeny, Robert H. was born in Charleston in 1848, the youngest child of Thomas James and Anne Susanna Hatch Sweeny. After the war, he worked for the Courier in Charleston, in circulation, and ran a news store on King Street. He moved to Summerville in about 1880, where he published a weekly paper and became active in the S.C. Press Association and in state politics. He was Adjudant General of State Militia in 1898. He died in 1939 at the age of 91.

Note:
This is a most confusing unit. Both first hand reports state it is 2nd Battalion while also making reference to command structure that is definately 3rd Regiment. It may very well be that when the militia was called up in June they were part of 2nd Battalion of State Troops but when they were actually called up in November, they were formed up into 3rd regiment.
Unless I find something that leads me back to the 2nd, I am leaving it here in the 3rd.

They were mustered into service of South Carolina at Batesburg, November 1864 and disbanded at Spartanburg, April 1865.
