Some landowners who have cemeteries located on their property, are preventing family members from visiting and maintaining the graves of their love-ones. Some landowners or their livestock are desecrating/destroying their cemeteries. A cemetery is a place not only for the burial of the dead, but for an expression of love and respect by the living for the dead. Descendants have the legal right of burial, visitation, maintenance and beautification of graves. Visit http://chicora.org/sc-cemetery-law.html.
See Preservation of Cemeteries and Preservation of Tombstones
See Searching Around SC for helpful researching links.
Estimated GPS mapping values will normally get you within eyesight of the cemetery.
It's very common for a cemetery to be known by several different names.
If the cemetery's alternate name(s) is known, it will be noted somewhere on the webpage.
Multiple surnames used to describe a cemetery, will normally be listed in alphabetical order.
Example: Brown-Jones-Wilson Cemetery (not Wilson-Brown-Jones Cemetery)
Surnames will normally come before given names.
Example: Brown Family, John (not John Brown Family)
On-line Cemetery Survey Book Surname Indexes will only tell you in what survey book and on what page number a recorded tombstone inscription can be found.
Each county webpage contains Unknown Name cemeteries and/or missing estimated GPS mapping values. If you can be of any help in identifying these cemeteries, e-mail your specifics to Gary Flynn at ke8fd@bellsouth.net.
