Marion, Francis

As a French Huguenot, Francis Marion's father came to South Carolina after fleeing France due to persecution. Marion was born in Berkeley county, South Carolina, and as a young man he received training on strategies while fighting with the Cherokees. In the Revolutionary War he fought under the command of William Moultrie, who was a fellow South Carolinian. Marion, who later became known as the "swamp fox", also fought at the Battle of Cowpens and helped in the capture of Georgetown.
