When the Santee Canal opened in 1800 to connect the Santee and Cooper rivers, it was America's first summit canal. Today, you will find an 11,000 square foot Interpretive Center plus many miles of boardwalks and trails. The Berkeley Museum is located here also, which has numerous historic artifacts. You can rent canoes here to paddle along the old waterways.
